WHMIS (Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System) certificate program provides students, who may be exposed to hazardous substances in the workplace, with a general understanding of the safe and efficient handling of hazardous products. WHMIS course helps students to meet their obligations under the Occupational Health and Safety Act and specifically Regulations of the WHMIS.
WHMIS course benefits
WHMIS is a comprehensive national hazard communication standard and system for safe management of hazardous chemicals, legislated by both the federal and provincial jurisdictions. It is a tripartite effort of labor, industry, and government which took several years to develop; it is unique in that it represents a consensus of these three groups. Its legislations provide that workers must be informed about the hazards in the workplace and receive appropriate training to enable them to work safely and it is their right to know. To accomplish this, all suppliers (manufacturers, importers, packagers and processors) must label and prepare Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) for products they make, import, package, or process that meet the hazard criteria set out in the Controlled Product Regulations under the federal Hazardous Products Act.
